- They say you can?t teach an old dog new tricks. Fortunately, this is not always true. Researchers at the Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience (NIN-KNAW) have now discovered how the adult brain can adapt to new situations. The Dutch researchers? findings are published on Wednesday in the prestigious journal 'Neuron'. Their study may be significant in the treatment of neurodevelopmental disorders such as epilepsy, autism and schizophrenia.

- The Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences has awarded the Academy Professor Prize to Ewine van Dishoeck, Professor of Molecular Astrophysics at Leiden University, and Peter Hagoort, Professor of Cognitive Neurosciences at Radboud University Nijmegen.
- New Academy President selected: Hans Clevers succeeds Robbert Dijkgraaf 26-03-2012
- Geneticist and physician Hans Clevers (born in 1957) will succeed Robbert Dijkgraaf as President of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) on 1 June. Clevers is currently the Director of the Academy?s Hubrecht Institute for Developmental Biology and Stem Cell Research and Professor of Molecular Genetics at University Medical Centre Utrecht (UMCU). The official hand-over will take place during the annual Academy Afternoon Session on Tuesday 5 June.

François Hammer and Ieke Moerdijk will be awarded the Descartes-Huygens Prize on 3 April 2012. They are receiving the prize for their outstanding research and their contribution to Franco-Dutch relations. The Descartes-Huygens Prize (EUR 23,000) is intended to cover the cost of their research residence in the Netherlands and France respectively. The Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences has awarded the 2012 Dr A.H. Heineken Prize for Art (EUR 50,000) to Peter Struycken, a Dutch artist who lives and works in Gorinchem, the Netherlands. He has received the prize for the methodical way in which he has used shapes, colours and processes in his innovative and appealing works of art for the past fifty years.
