The Distinguished Lorentz Fellowship 2009 will be awarded to one of the most eminent Dutch Scholars in Computer Science, on 11 March 2009. Professor Jan van Leeuwen of Utrecht University is celebrated for his achievements in the development of informatics and the philosophy of informatics.
Venue: Wednesday 11 March 2009, 4:30 PM, Conference Building, NIAS, Meijboomlaan 1, 2242 PR Wassenaar
Distinguished Lorentz Fellow, Jan van Leeuwen, Professor of Computer Science at Utrecht University, will hold a Lecture entitled 'The Quest for a Philosophy of the Information and Computing Sciences'.
Every year NIAS awards one special fellowship and a prize to a distiguished scholar who has played a highly influential role in bridging the divides between different sciences. This is the Distinguished Lorentz Fellowship, which carries a personal prize, an invitation to stay at NIAS and a monetary sum to be used for the organisation of an interdisciplinary workshop at the Lorentz Center. The Distinguished Lorentz Fellowship is an invitational fellowship, for which candidates are nominated by leading scholars in the field.
Jan van Leeuwen will use this fellowship to develop the Philosophy of Computer Science, a field that has great contemporary significance in a society that is increasingly dependent on cyber-technology. Together with experts outside the Netherlands, Van Leeuwen is creating an original way to approach this new subject.
