The Academy is both a learned society and an organisation of national research institutes. The Academy Board defines the overall policy and budget. Day-to-day management and overall responsibility is entrusted to the director of general affairs. The director of research is responsible for the policy of the Academy's research organisation.

Academy Board

The Academy Board consists of the president and boards of the Humanities and Social Sciences Division and the Science Division.

President

The president chairs the Academy Board. The president is appointed for a four-year period and may be reappointed for a second term of no more than four years.

Learned society

The society consists of two divisions: the Humanities and Social Sciences Division and the Science Division. Both divisions have their own board. The Joint Meeting of Members – i.e. the memberships of the two divisions – takes place once a year. The Joint Meeting elects the Academy Board from among its members and adopts the Academy’s rules and regulations.

Humanities and Social Sciences Division

This division covers the humanities, law, behavioural sciences and social sciences.

Science Division

This division covers mathematics, physics, life sciences and technical sciences.

Board of Management

The Board of Management consists of the director general and the director of research. The director general has overall responsibility for day-to-day management of the Academy. The director of research bears primary responsibility for the Academy’s research division. That division consists of seventeen research institutes.

The Staff Department assists the Board of Management. 

The Young Academy

The Young Academy is a platform of fifty young researchers (25-45 years of age) who are among the leading scientists and scholars in their fields. It organises inspiring activities focusing on interdisciplinarity, science policy, and the interface between science and society. Although facilitated by the Academy, the Young Academy operates independently.
