The International Institute of Social History (IISH) is the world’s largest documentation and research centre for social history. Founded in 1935, the Institute collects and preserves the legacy of social movements and makes that legacy available for study.
The IISH is an independent institute and therefore a natural repository for documents and artefacts related to the labour and other social movements – a legacy that in many cases would have otherwise disappeared.
The Institute’s research department focuses on the history of labour relations and organises international projects on this subject. Its extensive collection (consisting of archives, a library and audio-visual material) takes up well over 50 kilometres of shelving.
