The Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience (NIN-KNAW) conducts fundamental neuroscience research, with special emphasis on the brain and the visual system. Its research programme focuses on fundamental mechanisms, the causes of neurological and psychiatric disorders, the development of brain functions, and diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.
The NIN’s research is multidisciplinary in nature. It makes use of genetic, molecular and cellular approaches. It also studies the function of neuronal networks and the brain as a whole.
What international experts have to say about the NIN
A committee of international experts will be evaluating the Institute in 2012. As soon as the evaluation has been completed, the Academy will publish the relevant documents on this page.

The NIN was founded in 2005. It is the result of a merger between two Academy research institutes: the Netherlands Institute for Brain Research (NIH, established in 1909) and the Netherlands Ophthalmic Research Institute (IOI, established in 1988). In 2010, the NIN had 156.60 FTEs.
