The NIOD Institute for War, Holocaust and Genocide Studies investigates the history of world wars and genocides in their historical context and studies their long-term effects on society. It also conducts important research into the Holocaust in the Netherlands and elsewhere.
The NIOD administers the archives of the German occupation of the Netherlands and the Japanese occupation of the Dutch East Indies, as well as large collections of clandestine newspapers and pamphlets, photographs, books and articles.

The NIOD has been part of the Academy since 1999. In 2010, the then Netherlands Institute for War Documentation (NIOD) merged with the Centre for Holocaust and Genocide Studies. In 2010, the NIOD had 66.3 FTEs.
