The Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO) conducts fundamental and strategic research on organisms, populations, ecological communities and ecosystems.
The Netherlands Institute of Ecology conducts terrestrial and freshwater ecological research. Its researchers study how living organisms interact with one another and with their environment. They study nature in the broadest sense of the word: from the DNA of bacteria to the biodiversity of ecosystems. Expert knowledge of this kind can help society solve problems related to nature and the environment and take informed decisions about how to keep the earth habitable. Everything that the NIOO stands for is reflected in its new eco-friendly, high-tech, innovative research centre in Wageningen.
In late 2012, the Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO-KNAW) was assessed as excellent – the highest possible score – by a committee of international experts. In order to maintain the current quality, the committee made a number of recommendations. For instance, the committee recommended that a strategic plan be drawn up in order to be better prepared for the future and to ensure greater interaction between the PhD students and research fellows from the various departments of the institute. The NIOO management board has taken these recommendations to heart. The Academy Board is delighted with the positive evaluation, which will help the institute to maintain its current quality. You will find the evaluation documents in the right-hand column on this page.
