The Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies (KITLV) supports research on Southeast Asia, the Pacific Area and the Caribbean from the perspective of anthropology, linguistics, the social sciences and history. It places special emphasis on Indonesia, Suriname and the islands of the former Netherlands Antilles.
The Institute aims to collect books and other documents and make them accessible, support and conduct research, and publish books and journals. Its main office is in Leiden (Netherlands); it also has a branch in Jakarta.

The KITLV has been part of the Academy since 2001. In 2010, it had 37.3 FTEs in the Netherlands and eight in Jakarta.
