Every report, memorandum or study is drawn up by a committee of Academy members and experts. Before the members are appointed, they are vetted for conflicts of interest. As a rule, committee members receive no compensation for their work. The draft report or study is also reviewed by a group of independent experts.
The Academy has installed the 'Value of Research' Committee, which will first survey what is meant by 'value of research'.
The Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences has been asked by the State Secretary for Education, Culture and Science to issue an advisory report on how to deal with dual use research in the life sciences. The report will be issued at the end of 2013. The request was prompted in part by the debate that arose following the H5N1 study carried out by Prof. Ron Fouchier’s research group.
The aim of this advisory report is to increase awareness of the methodology concerning human-related research during the introduction of medical technologies ('devices') in healthcare.
