The purpose of the accreditation procedure administered by the Research School Accreditation Committee (ECOS) is to accredit research schools that run PhD programmes. ECOS also advises research schools on their teaching and supervision. Research schools are accredited for a six-year period; thereafter, they can apply for re-accreditation. The application for accreditation must be submitted in December prior to the year in which the Accreditation Committee is asked to grant the accreditation.
The Research School Accreditation Committee assesses teaching and research at Dutch research schools against specific quality criteria. Approximately two thirds of the accredited research schools resulted from partnerships between research groups at multiple universities.
The Academy established the Research School Accreditation Committee in 1992 at the request of the Dutch Ministry of Education and Science. Evaluation rounds have taken place annually since that year. The committee is an independent body.
