CAS-KNAW Joint PhD Training Programme

The CAS-KNAW Joint PhD Training Programme is run jointly by the Chinese Academy of Science (CAS) and the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW). The programme offers outstanding PhD candidates from China and the Netherlands the opportunity to conduct PhD research in their respective countries.

Objective

The programme allows outstanding Chinese and Dutch PhD candidates to conduct their graduate research in successful joint research projects run by CAS institutes and Dutch universities or research institutes.

Key objectives

  • To produce a new generation of young Chinese and Dutch scientists trained both in the Netherlands and in China. These young scientists will have first-hand knowledge of the institutions and systems in both countries and will be trained within their specific line of research. They will also benefit from the complementary expertise of the best scientists in the field in China and the Netherlands.
  • To foster lasting collaboration in Sino-Dutch research networks. Joint training of PhD candidates promotes closer ties and cooperation between Dutch and Chinese research groups and researchers. It also encourages and supports more intense, long-term collaboration.

Research

The Academy and GUCAS selected 29 PhD projects for the 2005-2013 funding period in five consecutive rounds. Applications for the programme are now closed.
