Academy Professorship Indonesia

The Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Indonesian Academy of Sciences (AIPI) have set up a rotating scheme of professorships hosted by Indonesian universities. The appointees are eminent Indonesian researchers in the social sciences, life sciences, and natural sciences.

Objective

The objectives of the Academy Professorship Indonesia programme are:

  • to improve the position of science and the arts in Indonesia;
  • to foster scientific curiosity and an academic culture;
  • to raise public awareness of the importance of science in Indonesia.

Cooperation

The Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies in Jakarta (KITLV-Jakarta) proposed establishing Academy-funded rotating professorships at Indonesian universities. The Academy and the AIPI embraced this initiative in 2004. The Academy Professorship Indonesia was established by two Memorandums of Understanding: a bilateral agreement between the two academies and a multilateral agreement between the two academies, the Indonesian Institute of Sciences, and the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research. The programme office is hosted by KITLV-Jakarta.

Professorships

The first Academy Professor Indonesia (Social Sciences) has been M.A. Yunita Triwardani Winarto. Her Academy Professorship has run from 1 September 2006 until 31 August 2011.

The second Academy Professor Indonesia (Life Sciences) is David Handojo Muljono.
