Henk Lekkerkerker (1946), professor of Physical Chemistry, will receive the Bakhuys Roozeboom Medal for phase equilibria on 15 December. The medal honours his research into colloids in general and colloidal liquid crystals in particular. Colloids are rod-like, plate-like or spherical particles suspended in liquid and measuring between a millionth and a thousandth of a millimetre in size. The particles are highly suitable experimental subjects and Professor Lekkerkerker has taken advantage of their potential and conducted his research with great creativity, according to the Academy's jury.
