Toward a Sustainable World
Conveners: Jos van der Meer and Sangkot Marzuki
The Joint Working Committee for Scientific Cooperation between Indonesia and The Netherlands (JWC) organised the Open Science Meeting 2007 'Towards a Sustainable World' on 19 and 20 November 2007 at the Mercure Resort Sanur, Bali, Indonesia. The festive and formal opening of the meeting took place on Sunday evening 18 November 2007.
Sustainable development is one of the biggest and probably most important challenges humanity is facing. The far-reaching effects of unsustainable human activities on the world's social and natural systems are becoming increasingly more visible and noticeable in virtually every corner of the world. The ever more apparent threats to civilization have made people, communities and governments conscious of the need for a serious worldwide response. Integral scientific research into the (correlated) causes and effects of human development in the past, the present and the future in relation to the earth as a natural system are indispensable for supporting an effective approach for a sustainable world, as is the translation of results into scenarios and solutions.
