Introduction
The Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) is responsible for the implementation and administration of three programmes for scientific cooperation and exchange with the People's Republic of China funded by the Netherlands Ministry of Education, Culture, and Science (OCW). These three programmes are:
  • The China Exchange Programme
  • CAS-KNAW Joint PhD training programme
  • The Programme Strategic Scientific Alliances.
Programmes
The China Exchange Programme (CEP) aims at stimulating long-term scientific cooperation through exchange of senior researchers and joint research projects between both countries in all fields of research. Annual budget 540,000 EUR.

Within the China Exchange Programme in 2004 an additional funding scheme has been initiated. The CAS-KNAW Joint PhD Training Programme is aimed at excellent Chinese and Dutch PhD students within the context of proven successful joint research projects between Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) Institutes and Netherlands universities and research institutes. Annual Netherlands budget 145,200 EUR. Annual CAS budget: matching in kind and additional funding.

The Programme Strategic Scientific Alliances (PSA) aims at establishing a limited number of Strategic Scientific Alliances in the fields of material sciences, biotechnology/drug research, and environmental science. The intended duration of this programme is 15 years. Annual budget 1,360,000 EUR.

China Committee
A scientific committee consisting of relevant experts, i.e. China Committee, advises and supports the Executive Board of KNAW in the administration of the China programme and all other matters concerning scientific cooperation between China and the Netherlands.
