Paper Degradation by Air Pollution
Paper consists of a network of fibres
The main structural element of paper fibres is cellulose, a chain of glucose molecules.
Absorption of air pollutant sulpher dioxide, (SO2), eventually leads to the formation of sulphiric acid, (H3SO4), in paper.
this acid induces the breakage of the cellulose molecules
and in the long term the degradation of paper.
