  SEPIADES Cataloguing photographic collections
by Yola de Lusenet and Edwin Klijn

This report provides background information on the SEPIADES (SEPIA Data Element Set) advisory report and software tool (see below: SEPIADES - Recommendations for cataloguing photographic collections). SEPIADES is a multi-level data element set to catalogue photographic collections. Apart from 21 core elements, it contains many suggestions for use of specific, detailed elements. The report explains about the motives behind SEPIADES, providing an introduction to both the model and the software tool. It is aimed at all those involved in cataloguing photographic collections, both cataloguers and decision makers.

Copies of the report can be ordered on-line (16 euros plus postage and handling costs, see: http://www.knaw.nl/ecpa/publications.html ) or downloaded from the ECPA website free of charge.

  Train the Trainers:
resources for planning courses on the preservation of photographic materials, developed in the framework of the SEPIA project (SEPIA)

Training opportunities specifically aimed at historical photographic collections are few and far between. For photographic preservation, there are very few experts and the subject is not taught at many schools. For those who manage photographic collections it is important to understand the full range of options available for keeping collections accessible over time. This course pack has been developed in the framework of the SEPIA project, a programme for activities relating to preservation and digitisation of historical photographic collections.

The CD is meant for trainers, not for students. The materials that are included should be regarded as examples. Trainers should feel free to adapt, expand or translate as they see fit. It includes general tips for organising a course, some example course models, PowerPoint presentations which could be used as a basis for lessons, a reading list, case studies, a list of ISO/ANSI standards, sample loanforms, condition reports and images of damaged photographic materials. The CD has been made as an internet application and can be viewed with any internet browser.

The Working Group on Descriptive Models has developed an advisory model for describing photo collections. The descriptive model is available on this site(4MB PDF), or can be ordered as a hard copy. In close cooperation with the working group a sofware tool has been made in which the recommendations are implemented. A beta release of this tool is now available on CD for evaluation purposes.
