The Academy has an advisory role that is defined by law. It may offer solicited and unsolicited advice concerning both ‘science for policy’ and ‘policy for science’. In the case of unsolicited advice, the Academy takes the initiative. When the Academy is asked to advise, the request usually comes from a Minister or State Secretary (for Education, Culture and Science or another ministry).
The work programme may therefore be amended in the course of the year. The Academy’s advisory councils and Board meet formally twice a year to discuss the schedule, once in the spring and once in the autumn. The Academy Board adopts the schedule of advisory reports.
