The Dr A.H. Heineken Prize for History

Established in 1990, the prize rewards outstanding scholarly achievement in the field of history. It consists of a trophy representing a silver water clock, which stands for the symbol of Clio, and a cash prize of $150,000.


Historically, prizes have been awarded as follows:
1994: Dfl 150,000
2000: $150,000

To be eligible for the Dr A.H. Heineken Prize for History, nominees should be active scholars who are expected to continue their research activities for at least ten years. Their achievements in the field of history are outstanding and a source of inspiration to others.

The award will be presented to a single individual. No restrictions are placed on the candidate’s nationality or sex. The Academy will particularly value the nomination of women.

Deadline for nominations is 1 November 2009.
2008 laureate: Jonathan I. Israel
The Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences has awarded the Dr A.H. Heineken Prize for History 2008 (USD 150,000) to
Professor Jonathan I. Israel
School of Historical Studies, Institute for Advanced Studies, Princeton, New Jersey, United States
'for his vitally new perspective on the history of the Enlightenment'.
