Academy Medal
The Academy Medal is awarded to individuals who have made an outstanding contribution in the Netherlands to the advancement of science in the broadest sense of the word. The Medal was established in 1983.
Academy Merian Prize
The Academy Merian Prize was established in 2008 to draw attention to female researchers in the Netherlands and to encourage more women to pursue careers in science and scholarship in the Netherlands. The prize was made possible by SNS REAAL Fonds, which discontinued its contribution as of 2014 owing to the repositioning of its portfolio.
Academy Prize for Astronomy and Art
The Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Society of Arts award the Academy Prize for Astronomy and Art to an artist who has created a work that is clearly inspired by astronomy.
Academy Professor Prize
The Academy awards the Academy Professor Prize to researchers between 54 and 59 years of age for exceptional achievement throughout the course of their careers. The Prize is intended as a lifetime achievement award.
Ammodo Science Awards
The Ammodo KNAW Award was established by the Ammodo Foundation and the Academy in 2014 to encourage unfettered fundamental scientific research. As of 2018 the name has been changed into the Ammodo Science Award. The Ammodo Science Award is granted once every two years and covers all scientific disciplines.
Bakhuis Roozeboom Fund
Every four years, the Academy awards a medal to a researcher who has made a significant contribution to phase theory.
Beijerink Premium
The Beijerinck Premium is intended to encourage virology research. It is awarded to a young post-doc researcher who is conducting outstanding virus-related research at a Dutch scientific organisation.
Beijerinck Virology Prize
The Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences awards the Beijerinck Virology Prize every two years to an internationally renowned researcher.
Bob Pinedo Cancer Care Award
The Bob Pinedo Cancer Care Award is a new biennial award for internationally acclaimed researchers in cancer care.
C.L. de Carvalho-Heineken Prize for Cognitive Sciences
The C.L. de Carvalho-Heineken Prize for Cognitive Sciences is awarded to an individual who has done outstanding work in cognitive science. The prize draws attention to the importance of studying the cognitive functions of human and animals, a relatively new branch of science.
Christiaan Huygens Science Award
The Christiaan Huygens Science Award encourages innovative research in the disciplines in which Christiaan Huygens excelled. The award is presented in a different discipline each year.
De la Court Prize
The Academy awards the De la Court Prize to an individual every other year for conducting research without financial reward, for example a large body of work, life achievement or outstanding accomplishment in the humanities or social sciences.
Descartes-Huygens Prize
The French and Dutch governments established the Descartes-Huygens Prize in 1995 to draw the attention of the public and researchers to Franco-Dutch relations in science and scholarship. The prize is awarded to researchers in all disciplines: humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and life sciences. By agreement, the Netherlands selects the French candidate for the prize, and France selects the Dutch candidate.

Dr A.H. Heineken Prize for Medicine
The Dr A.H. Heineken Prize for Medicine is awarded to a scientist who has conducted pioneering medical research.
Dr A.H. Heineken Prize for History
The Dr A.H. Heineken Prize for History recognises outstanding scholarly achievement in the field of history.
Dr A.H. Heineken Prize for Art
The Dr A.H. Heineken Prize for Art is intended to support artistic talent in the Netherlands. Alfred Heineken established the prize in order to recognise and encourage outstanding Dutch artists.
Dr A.H. Heineken Prize for Environmental Sciences
The Dr A.H. Heineken Prize for Environmental Sciences recognises outstanding achievement in the environmental sciences.
Dr H.P. Heineken Prize for Biochemistry and Biophysics
The Dr H.P. Heineken Prize for Biochemistry and Biophysics is awarded by the Dr H.P. Heineken Foundation and supports outstanding research in biochemistry and biophysics.
Dr Hendrik Muller Prize
The Dr Hendrik Muller Prize is awarded every two years to a mid-career researcher working in the Netherlands, who has a sustainable link with the Netherlands and has made an outstanding contribution to the humanities or social sciences. The Dr Hendrik Muller Prize is the successor to the Dr Hendrik Muller Prize for Behavioural and Social Sciences, which was awarded from 1991 to 2017.
Eureka Prize for Science Communication
NWO and the Academy have been working together from 2012 - 2015 to promote public awareness of science and public access to scientific knowledge and understanding by awarding the Eureka Prize.
Gilles Holst Foundation
The Gilles Holst Fund medal is awarded in the field of applied chemistry and physics.
Heineken Young Scientists Awards
The Heineken Young Scientists Awards are intended to give talented young scientists and scholars extra encouragement. They are presented simultaneously with the Heineken Prizes to talented young researchers whose outstanding work sets an example for other young scientists and scholars.
Holleman Prize, Dutch Foundation for Chemistry
Leeuwenhoek Medal
The Leeuwenhoek Medal, established in 1877 by the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW), in honour of the 17th- and 18th-century microscopist Antoni van Leeuwenhoek, is granted every ten years to the scientist judged to have made the most significant contribution to microbiology during the preceding decade. From 2015 the Royal Dutch Society for Microbiology (KNVM) will be awarding the Leeuwenhoek Medal.
Lorentz Medal
The Lorentz Medal draws attention to ground-breaking research in theoretical physics. The Lorentz Medal is awarded every four years to a researcher who has made a significant contribution to the advancement of theoretical physics.
National Postdoc Prize
The National Postdoc Prize was established in 2017 by The Young Academy and the Royal Holland Society of Sciences and Humanities (KHMW) as an incentive for postdoc researchers and assistant professors who conduct excellent scientific research that could have a major impact on society.
Van der Gaag Fund
The Van der Gaag Fund is responsible for endowing four chairs in research on ‘prosocial behaviour’ for a period of five years.
