Carlijn Bouten is a pioneer in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. One of her achievements was a technique that induces a damaged heart to construct new heart valves. Bouten’s research focuses on the interface between biology, medicine and engineering. She looks beyond individual cells to complete tissues. She also combines cells with artificial material. Bouten, a former member of The Young Academy, is frequently invited to join discussions on the ethical aspects of tissue engineering in health care.
