Christian Lange is one of the leading scholars of Arabic and Islamic studies of his generation. He combines the traditional text-based approach to Islam with methods borrowed from sociology, religious studies, philosophy and anthropology. One of his works is a cultural history of paradise and hell in Islam. Lange runs a weekly tutorial on advanced readings in Arabic and helps researchers from the Middle East find research positions at Utrecht University.
