Lecture by John McNeill, laureate of the 2018 Dr A.H. Heineken Prize for History.

All historians know the Industrial Revolution as an economic and social transformation, but it was also an environmental process with global reach. This lecture explores some of the ecological implications in East Africa, the American West, Argentina, New Zealand, and elsewhere of mobilizing unprecedented quantities of fibers, ores, lubricants and other raw materials of industrial production.

John McNeill

John R. McNeill, Professor of History at Georgetown University in Washington D.C. (USA), is receiving the 2018 Dr A.H. Heineken Prize for History for his important work in integrating two recent branches of the study of history: global history and environmental history.
