During this two-day conference, several scholars will present new research on the societal impact of abolishing the transatlantic slave trade, in particular urban slavery.

Research into the abolition of Atlantic slavery has often ignored the urban context. This is surprising since the abolition had great consequences for social relations in urban settings. Scholars of Caribbean, West-African, Brazilian, Algerian and American history will present their new findings during this conference.

The conference is being funded in part by the Academy’s Conference Grants Fund.
