China and the Netherlands to join forces in water management research

11 March 2009

(NWO and KNAW joint press release) The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) and the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) have reached agreement with their Chinese partner organisations on the theme of the new Joint Scientific Thematic Research Programme (JSTP).

During a recent visit to China, the partners selected "Integrated water management in relation to climate change and sea level rise" as the theme for the first JSTP round.
>The NWO and the KNAW have chosen the theme to complement the NWO theme "Sustainable Earth". The first call for proposals will open officially on 15 March in both China and the Netherlands. The deadline is 15 June 2009.
>The aim of the joint research programme is to promote long-term collaboration between Dutch and Chinese scientists. Under the JSTP, Chinese-Dutch research teams may submit proposals for joint research projects and theme-based seminars. Every year, the partners select a theme that keys into current research and, ultimately, will allow them to cover all the various scientific disciplines. What is unique about the JSTP is that it involves multiple partners in both the Netherlands and China. This gives researchers comprehensive access to the research landscape in both countries.
>The JSTP is being funded by the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, the NWO, the KNAW, the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology, the Chinese Ministry of Education, the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. The Dutch share of the budget comes to EUR 2.7 million. It is the first time that the Dutch Science Ministry, the NWO and the KNAW will work together to develop bilateral collaboration with Chinese ministries and academies.

The NWO and the KNAW will organise a workshop in Beijing (May 2009) in the run-up to the deadline. This will give selected researchers an opportunity to work with their actual or potential partners on their proposals.
>The Call for Proposals of the JSTP can be found on the NWO's website.
