Directly to

At the twelve institutes affiliated to the Academy, more than 1,500 people go to work every day. Together, they work on scientific research and on collections that are leading in the Netherlands and abroad. The Academy's institutes contribute to solutions for urgent challenges and societal transitions. The aim is to create a society of healthy people, a resilient society and a sustainable planet.

    The Academy and NWO institutes

The Netherlands has twenty-two national institutes. The Academy is responsible for twelve of these institutes, whereas NWO-i is responsible for ten. In total, they employ more than 3,000 professionals, who work every day to push the boundaries of our knowledge within their fields, in the service of society.

The KNAW and NWO-i institutes dedicate their research to major societal challenges. These include climate change, the energy transition, social inequality, and pandemics. In this way, these national research institutes contribute to building a flexible, resilient knowledge-based society, and to innovations that strengthen the competitiveness of the Netherlands and Europe. Now and in the future.

    Our research policy

The Academy has research policies to enable research within the institutes. For example, professorial policy and knowledge transfer. We also focus on quality assurance, open science, and the national programme 'Recognition and Rewards’. Would you like to know more?
