Academic freedom worldwide
Fellows are given the time and space to immerse themselves in a subject that simply interests them, based on their accumulated knowledge and experience. Together with these researchers and others, NIAS explores the topicality and meaning of academic freedom worldwide, and aims to promote and defend it.
Breaking barriers
Every semester, a new research community of scientists, artists, writers and journalists comes together at NIAS. In this collective, individual work and ingrained ways of thinking are intensively questioned. Barriers between fields and disciplines are broken down. While NIAS is primarily rooted in the humanities and social sciences, researchers from the life and STEM sciences are also increasingly participating.
