Climate change

The IPCC report published in August 2021 entitled The Physical Science Basis again demonstrates two issues: the urgency of the climate issue, on the one hand, and the indispensable role of science in establishing and weighing the facts and searching for possible solutions, on the other. The Academy feels a joint responsibility for and urgency about this matter and wishes to contribute in different ways and on different levels: as a learned society and guardian and interpreter of science, as an institute organisation and in its own day-to-day management.

The Academy and climate

Science is indispensable when it comes to climate issues: in establishing and weighing facts and in searching for solutions.

With the scientific experts in its ranks, who come from the full breadth of science, and as a research organisation, the Academy can and wants to contribute to policy-making and to the public debate on the subject.

Planetary Health

For this advisory report, the Academy is taking stock of the scientific knowledge needed in the field of planetary health and the priorities for knowledge development for the Netherlands.

Society of Arts

Advisory group

Within the Academy, an advisory board group is active that coordinates and drives the various initiatives.

The advisory group consists of the four council chairs, the chairs of The Young Academy and the Society of Arts and the president of the Academy, and is chaired by the following members:

  • energy scientist Richard van de Sanden
  • former board member Maarten Prak
